I am inspired by painters who have the ability to see a wide value range and use this in the design of their composition. Monet did studies of rather common subjects - haystacks, steeples - in every different light to understand how the value and temperature of the colors changed. Edward Hopper used the stark contrast of light at night to increase the drama and poignancy of his subjects. Light out of darkness creates an emotional reaction and sometimes connection - one that surpasses the effect of color or subject. Hope you enjoy! Many of her paintings appear to be looking into the heart of the flower to see its essence, its soul. When I paint the flowers in my garden I am focused on really seeing the flower, the shapes, the changes in value and hue. A pink or red flower contains every color in the light spectrum if you look close enough. I've spent a lot of time in Paris and London. The Centre Pompidou and Musee d' Orsay in Paris, and The National Gallery in London have become some of my favorites. I've included links to their ONLINE museums so you can enjoy them too (see lower left on my home page). These museums house a wide range of artists, periods and styles, from the old masters to the modern pop artists. I am always so inspired to paint after spending time in these art cathedrals.

Sun, 06 Sep 2009 17:08:54 CDT
